Welcome to Casa de Adoufe.

When we started this project over a quarter of a century ago, there was nothing but a bare mountain, a house and a palm tree. However, we immediately realized its potential and what it could become once we looked beyond the land’s limitations. Protected from the north and northeast winds, and kissed by the sun from its rise until the last golden beams hide behind the hills, Casa de Adoufe receives countless hours of sunlight that become a festival of fruits and flowers.

We were looking for a place where we could forget about worries and busy life, and relax and enjoy ourselves in the company of our relatives and friends. A cozy and bright house, and a mysterious and changing garden, where the boundaries between dwelling and landscape would blur. After all, Casa de Adoufe is much more than a house and a garden. It is carved time. A place that invites to relax because its conception and development cannot be understood outside the context of the flow of time, by which each tree, each bush, each hundred-year-old piece of furniture finds its place and takes shape.

With time and dedication, we transformed a desolate mountain of almost 20,000 m2 into a genuine botanical garden that can be enjoyed all year round. A place full of color and aromas, fruits and animals, fireflies, squirrels, kites, urchins, birds or butterflies. Our relatives and friends seemed to agree that the best birthday gift was a tree, a shrub or a plant, often baptized in their honor: Juan’s yew, Tareixa’s Buddha’s hand (or fingered citron), Manolo and Ana’s azalea, the olive tree of Palmeira, Andrés and Virginia’s horse-chestnut, etc.

Besides, while thinking about this project we also pondered over health and sustainability. Over the years we have tried to grow native, noncommercial fruit-bearing species – using organic fertilizers without chemicals– with scents that take us back to our childhood. Thus, depending on the time of year, the garden is filled up with edible flowers and aromatic plants: oregano, mint, thyme, rosemary, peppermint, wild strawberries, violets, pansies… which grow in harmony, giving up the limelight according to the seasons.
